Conversion Fingerprint

The Fingerprinting Conversion Type allows you to track conversions across different websites by creating a unique ID for each visitor. This is particularly useful when you need to track user actions on external sites and attribute them to the correct variation of your test.

How Fingerprinting Works

Fingerprinting uses the browser’s unique information, such as device size, resolution, fonts, and the user’s IP address, to create a unique ID for each test visitor. This ID is stored in a dedicated database, ensuring that even if the user navigates away from your site, you can still track their actions and attribute them to the correct test variation.

Setting Up Fingerprint Conversion Tracking

To set up fingerprinting for conversion tracking, follow these steps:

  1. Go to WP Admin> Settings > AB Split Test
  2. Select Enable Fingerprinting
  3. Save

Create a test with a fingerprint conversion

  1. Create a New Test
  2. Create any type of test you like
  3. Select the “Fingerprint Pixel” conversion type.
  4. Once selected, the plugin will generate a script specifically for fingerprinting this test.
  5. Copy this script and paste it into any external website where you want to trigger conversions. This could be a partner site, a third-party landing page, or any other web property where conversions occur.
  6. Save the changes to the external site, and the fingerprinting will begin tracking conversions linked back to your split test variations.
  7. Save the test to begin logging data.

Limitations of Fingerprinting

While fingerprinting is a powerful tool, there are some limitations to be aware of:

  • Device Similarity: Some devices may generate the same fingerprint ID if they are using similar devices on the same IP address, leading to less accurate tracking. This can slightly slow down the process of determining a winning variation.
  • Database Size: Fingerprinting requires the use of an additional database to store the unique IDs. Depending on your traffic volume, this can lead to an increase in database size, which may impact performance over time.

Conclusion

Despite its limitations, Fingerprinting Conversion Type is a valuable addition to your testing toolkit, especially when tracking conversions across multiple domains. By leveraging this feature, you can gain deeper insights into user behavior and make more informed decisions about your website’s performance.
