How to A/B Test Your Header in Elementor (or Any Theme Builder)
Can changing your header layout really impact conversions?
Yes - sometimes by a lot.
In this quick tutorial, we’ll walk through how to split test your site’s header using the AB Split Test plugin. Whether you’re using Elementor, Bricks, Beaver Builder, Breakdance, WPBakery, or even a custom-coded header, the setup process is almost identical — and only takes a few minutes.
Why Test Your Header?
Your header is one of the most visible and frequently interacted-with parts of your site. It influences navigation, trust, and how quickly users find what they need.
Even small changes, like adjusting the layout, simplifying the menu, or changing CTA placement, can lead to noticeable improvements in engagement, clicks, and revenue.
With AB Split Test, you can run real-world experiments to see what actually works best for your visitors.
Here’s how to set up a test using Elementor. If you’re using another builder, the process will be very similar.
1. Edit Your Header Template
Open your site’s header in the Elementor Theme Builder. Once it loads, click the section you want to test and go to the Advanced tab.
Scroll down to the AB Split Test panel and click Create New Test.
2. Set Your Conversion Goal
Name your test something like “Header Layout Test” and choose a conversion goal.
In this example, we want to track whether users are interacting with the header, so we’ll use the “On Element Click” goal.
This will track clicks on any link inside your header. If your theme uses a custom class, like .main-menu a, feel free to use that instead.
3. Create Your Variation
Back in Elementor, create the variation you want to test.
You can duplicate the original section and make changes directly, or, if you're using Elementor Pro, pull in a different header template from your library.
In this example, we’re comparing a basic header against one with a two-row layout.
Place both versions next to each other inside the builder. In the AB Split Test panel for each section, assign variation names.
If your variation spans multiple sections or rows, make sure each one is assigned the same variation name.
4. Monitor the Results
Once the test is running, AB Split Test handles the stats for you:
- Visits
- Conversions
- Conversion rate
- Graphs showing variation performance over time
It even projects which version is likely to win so you don’t have to crunch any numbers yourself.
